Carpenter apprenticeship

Framing, forms, interiors and more, with pay from day one.

Learn carpentry the paid way

Carpentry covers far more than houses. Carpenter apprentices build concrete forms for bridges, hang drywall and ceilings in hospitals, install doors and millwork, and put up scaffolding. The apprenticeship lets you try several of these before you settle on one.

In short

Carpenter apprenticeships usually take three or four years, according to BLS, with paid work on job sites and classroom or shop training each year. The United Brotherhood of Carpenters runs union training centers, and contractor groups such as ABC run merit shop programs. Carpenters earned a median $60,580 in May 2025, and about 62,800 openings are projected each year.

What the job asks of you

Carpentry is physical: lifting sheet goods, working on ladders and scaffolds, and being outside in all weather. Math shows up every day in layout, measuring and cutting angles. Good carpenters are careful and quick at the same time.
