In short
Most elevator mechanics complete a four-year apprenticeship, according to BLS. Union apprentices train through the National Elevator Industry Educational Program, which pairs paid work with coursework. Applicants usually take an aptitude test covering math, reading and mechanical reasoning. Elevator installers earned a median $109,910 in May 2025, but only about 1,900 openings are projected each year, so competition is stiff.

Why it is competitive
With about 24,700 elevator installers and repairers in the whole country, openings come in small numbers. Programs may only take applications when contractors need help, then rank applicants by test score and interview.
What the test covers
The elevator industry aptitude test is commonly described as covering arithmetic, reading comprehension and mechanical comprehension, with a hands-on tool section in some areas. Practice with our mechanical aptitude practice test to get used to gears, levers and pulleys questions.
What you will do
Early on you help mechanics install rails, cabs and machines in new buildings. Later you troubleshoot controls, adjust door equipment and service hydraulic and traction systems. Many states license elevator mechanics, so check what your state requires after the apprenticeship.
