Day-one kit, then the upgrades.

Starter kit

Plumbing apprentices need a few heavy hitters right away. Here is a realistic starter kit.

In short

New plumbers usually need two pipe wrenches in different sizes, tongue-and-groove pliers, a tubing cutter, a hacksaw, a tape measure, a level, a utility knife, a flashlight or headlamp, Teflon tape and pipe dope, and safety glasses, gloves and boots. Employers usually supply power tools, press tools, drain machines and soldering or brazing equipment. Ask your shop which items it expects you to own.

Sources checked October 11, 2026Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.
