Day-one kit, then the upgrades.

Starter kit

HVAC techs carry more specialty gear than most trades. Here is how to start without overspending.

In short

A new HVAC technician typically needs screwdrivers and nut drivers, adjustable wrenches, pliers, a multimeter with a clamp, a tape measure, a level, tin snips, a flashlight, a refrigeration service wrench, and safety glasses and gloves. Gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery machines and refrigerant often belong to the employer at first. Handling refrigerant also requires EPA 608 certification.

Sources checked October 11, 2026Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.
