In short
OSHA's rule for powered industrial trucks, 29 CFR 1910.178, requires employers to train forklift operators with formal instruction, hands-on practice and an evaluation of the operator in the workplace before they operate on their own. Operators must be re-evaluated at least every three years and retrained after an accident, a near miss or unsafe operation. An online class alone cannot complete the requirement, because the evaluation must happen on the job.
What training has to cover
- How the specific truck works: controls, capacity, stability and inspection
- Workplace conditions: surfaces, ramps, loads, pedestrian traffic, narrow aisles
- Formal instruction, such as a class or video
- Practical training with the actual equipment
- An evaluation of your performance by someone with the knowledge and experience to train
The "card"
Many employers and training companies hand out wallet cards. They can be useful to show a new employer you have experience, but the new employer still has to make sure you are trained and evaluated on its trucks and site.
