How to get a CDL

Federal standards, step by step.

Commercial driver's license

Getting a CDL follows the same federal framework in every state, even though your state's driver licensing agency issues it. Here is the order things happen, and where people usually lose time.

In short

To get a CDL, you pass a DOT physical for a medical card, pass your state's written knowledge tests for a commercial learner's permit, and complete federally required entry-level driver training from a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. After holding the permit at least 14 days, you take the skills test: a vehicle inspection, basic control maneuvers and a road test. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.

Sources checked October 11, 2026Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.
