# How to become a lineman

Power lines, storm calls and one of the best paid trades.

Apprenticeship · Outdoors · Heights

Linemen build and repair the wires that carry electricity from power plants to homes. The work is outdoors, high up and sometimes in the worst weather of the year, which is part of why it pays so well.

In short

Most linemen start with a short pre-apprenticeship lineworker school or a utility helper job, then complete a multi-year apprenticeship that combines paid field work with classes. A CDL is usually required because line crews drive bucket and digger trucks. Electrical power-line installers and repairers earned a median $95,320 in May 2025, per BLS, with about 10,900 openings a year.

**Sources checked October 10, 2026** Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.

| Middle pay | $95,320 a year, roughly $45.83 an hour (May 2025) |
|---|---|
| How most people start | High school or GED to start, then long-term on-the-job training |
| People in the trade | About 131,900 nationwide (2025) |
| Growth to 2035 | BLS expects 10.3% growth |
| Openings a year | Around 10,900, counting retirements |

From the [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/emp/tables/occupational-projections-and-characteristics.htm) Employment Projections table (2025 to 2035) and May 2025 wage survey. These are U.S. numbers. Local shops may pay above or below them, and apprentices start well under the middle figure.

## The usual path

Step 1

### Get a CDL permit or license

Many programs and employers require a Class A or B.

Step 2

### Consider a lineworker school

Pre-apprenticeship programs teach climbing, rigging and safety in a matter of weeks or months.

Step 3

### Apply for an apprenticeship

Utilities, contractors and outside IBEW/NECA training programs run them.

Step 4

### Top out as a journeyman lineman

After years of field hours and classes.

## What the job is really like

You will climb poles and work from buckets, often near energized lines. Storms mean long shifts and travel. Physical fitness and a strict respect for safety rules are not optional.

## Straight answers

### How long does it take to become a lineman?

Apprenticeships commonly take several years. A pre-apprenticeship school before that can take a few months.

### Do linemen need a CDL?

Most employers require one because crews drive large utility trucks.

### Is being a lineman dangerous?

It is one of the more hazardous trades because of heights and electricity, which is why training and safety rules are strict.
