# HVAC tools list

Day-one kit, then the upgrades.

Starter kit

HVAC techs carry more specialty gear than most trades. Here is how to start without overspending.

In short

A new HVAC technician typically needs screwdrivers and nut drivers, adjustable wrenches, pliers, a multimeter with a clamp, a tape measure, a level, tin snips, a flashlight, a refrigeration service wrench, and safety glasses and gloves. Gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery machines and refrigerant often belong to the employer at first. Handling refrigerant also requires EPA 608 certification.

**Sources checked October 11, 2026** Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.

## Straight answers

### Do HVAC techs buy their own gauges?

Some shops supply them; many techs buy their own later.

### What meter do HVAC techs need?

A clamp meter that reads voltage, current, resistance and capacitance is common.

### Do I need EPA 608 to use gauges?

You need it to handle refrigerant. See [EPA 608](https://shapemycareer.com/certifications/epa-608/).
