# Electrician tools list

Day-one kit, then the upgrades.

Starter kit

Electrical apprentices are often handed a tool list on day one. Here is what is usually on it and why each piece matters.

In short

A new electrician usually needs linesman's pliers, wire strippers, diagonal cutters, a set of screwdrivers including a multi-bit driver, a tape measure, a torpedo level, a utility knife, a non-contact voltage tester, a tool pouch, and safety glasses and boots. Employers usually supply drills, benders, threaders and specialty meters. Use insulated tools rated for the work and follow your shop's rules on testing before you touch anything.

**Sources checked October 11, 2026** Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.

## Straight answers

### What tools does a first-year electrician need?

Hand tools for stripping, cutting and terminating wire, a tester, a tape and a level.

### Do I need my own multimeter?

Many shops supply meters at first. Ask before buying.

### Should I buy insulated tools?

Insulated tools add protection, but they never replace de-energizing and testing circuits.
