# How long welding school takes

Weeks to two years, depending on what you want to weld.

Timeline

Welding is one of the fastest trades to get into, but how long you train depends on whether you want a basic production job or pipe welding work.

In short

Welding programs range from short certificate courses of a few months to diploma programs of about a year and associate degrees of about two years. Short programs focus on one or two processes for entry-level production jobs. Longer programs cover more processes, pipe welding, blueprint reading and metallurgy. After training, many welders take certification tests, such as AWS Certified Welder tests, for the process and position an employer needs.
