# CDL school cost

Three ways to pay, and the fine print on free training.

Cost

CDL training is one of the shortest paths to a good paying job, and there are three ways to pay for it. Each has tradeoffs.

In short

CDL training cost depends on who trains you. Private truck driving schools and community college programs charge tuition. Some trucking companies offer company-paid training, usually in exchange for a commitment to drive for them for a set time, with repayment if you leave early. Since 2022, first-time Class A and B applicants must complete entry-level driver training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, whichever route you choose.

**Sources checked October 10, 2026** Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.

| Route | You pay | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Private school | Tuition | Total cost, pass rates, truck time |
| Community college | Tuition, often lower for locals | Waitlists, schedule |
| Carrier-paid training | Little or nothing up front | Work commitment, repayment if you leave, pay during training |
