# NCCER certification

Portable craft credentials that follow you job to job.

Industry craft credentials

NCCER is a nonprofit that writes construction training curricula and tracks credentials. When an industrial contractor asks whether you are "NCCER certified," they want to know which modules or craft levels you have completed and verified.

In short

NCCER credentials show you completed standardized craft training, from the Core curriculum through multiple levels in trades like electrical, pipefitting, welding and millwright. Training is delivered by accredited sponsors such as schools, contractors and associations. Written tests and hands-on performance verifications are recorded in the NCCER Registry, so employers anywhere can check your credentials. Many industrial and commercial contractors use NCCER for hiring and promotions.

**Sources checked October 9, 2026** Pay, training and outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay is the middle (median) figure nationally; your first paycheck in the trade will usually be lower.

## How it is built

- **Core:** basic safety, math, hand and power tools, blueprints, rigging basics and communication. Most crafts start here.
- **Craft levels:** each trade has several levels, roughly one per year of training.
- **Performance verifications:** an evaluator watches you do specific tasks.
- **Assessments:** experienced workers can test to show what they already know.

## Where it is common

Refineries, chemical plants, power plants and large commercial jobs, especially in the South and Gulf Coast, often use NCCER for craft hiring. Many high school and community college trade programs teach NCCER curricula, so students graduate with credentials already in the registry.

Through the NCCER Registry, which records the modules and levels you have completed.

### Does NCCER count toward an apprenticeship?

Many registered apprenticeship programs use NCCER curricula, so completed modules may count. Ask the sponsor.
