# EPA 608 certification

The federal card every refrigerant tech needs.

Required for HVAC and refrigeration

If you will connect gauges, recover refrigerant or charge a system, federal rules say you need EPA Section 608 certification. Employers expect it early, and many HVAC programs build the test into the first term.

In short

EPA Section 608 certification is required for technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerant. There are four levels: Type I for small appliances, Type II for high-pressure systems, Type III for low-pressure systems, and Universal for all three. Everyone takes the core section plus the type section. Tests are given by EPA-approved certifying organizations, and the certification does not expire.

## How testing works

Each section is a multiple choice test from an EPA-approved certifying organization. Many HVAC schools, supply houses and online programs offer it. Ask the testing organization how its exam is proctored and what score passes. Most techs aim for Universal so they never have to retest for a new job.

The rules behind the test are in 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F. The big ones: do not knowingly vent refrigerant, use certified recovery equipment and keep records the rules require. The test checks that you know them.
