Painter apprenticeships turn an often informal trade into a structured career with wage steps, safety training and specialty coatings work.

In short

Painter apprenticeships usually run two to four years, combining paid work with classes in surface preparation, coatings, spray equipment, lead and hazard safety, and scaffold and lift use. Many are run by IUPAT locals with contractors. Construction and maintenance painters earned a median $49,400 in May 2025, per BLS, with industrial coatings work often paying more.
